FOTRALLY 26/6 2014, Stockholm

Innlegg Niklas » 23 Mar 2014 09:48

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Fotrally is an annual event on it’s 5:th year 2014. It starts at Rålambshovsparken, Stockholm, Sweden, June 26th at 9 PM. It’s a one of a kind race in the world of endurance sports.

First of all, there is no pre-set finish line. For each participant, the race ends whenever you decide to quit. The only participant forced to stop is the final winner. He or she has to stop when the other last remaining competitor fails to continue and decides to end the race. In that moment, the race is over and the last person standing is the overall winner.
Also, there is no optional pace but all participants move along at exactly 5km/h. That means the whole starting field is kept together, walking as a unit. Leading the race is a pacer riding a bike. At the tail end there’s another bike and a car with a porta potty trailer. Participants must keep themselves between these two or be disqualified.

Fotrally is a non-stop race with the exception of designated check points every 6:th hour. Here you can change items between your drop-bag and whatever you choose to carry with you. That is, as long as you keep yourself between the pacing bike and the following car which both will continue rolling through the check point zone of approximately 500 meters.
So Fotrally is not a time race since there is no pre-set time limit. Neither is it a distance race since each competitor decides how far to go before quitting.

With this set-up a lot of common endurance race strategies and tactics are not applicable:
There is no room for running/walking schedules. There’s just walking.
There is no time to stop for massage, changing clothes or simply taking a break.
There is no break-out groups and no one left behind.
There is no bonking, just a continuous depletion of energy and slowly increasing discomfort.
For anyone interested in finding his/her ultimate limit of endurance, this is the race.
